>> reporter: we're live in san jose where police are searching for a man who tried to snatch a little girl out of her -- out of her mother earless. we'll tell you about the brazen attack and tell you what police are doing this morning. a chopper tragedy in england overnight. what we've learned about the accident that briefly caused panic all over great britain.

♪ oakland's police chief shouted down during a heated late-night meeting at city hall. the big issue -- what will happen next. also, the big speech begins in just two hours. president obama will unveil a plan that is sure to fuel the gun-control debate. "mornings on 2" starts right now. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's wednesday, january 16th. san jose police are investigating a bold kidnapping attempt of a 2-year-old girl outside of her home. ktvu eight janine de la vega is in san jose and talked with police a short time ago. janine, what did they tell you? >> reporter: a police spokesperson told me he's checking in with detectives right now to see if they got any tips overnight. now, they are taking that attempted kidnapping that

happened here on dale court very serious. they say the man was pulling on the child's legs so hard, that her shoes fell off. this all happened around 5:40 yesterday afternoon. this was near south white and aborn. a mother said she was playing in the front yard playing with her siblings and the man made a comment that she didn't like and she tried to pull her away. >> it's very turning. it's a brazen act on her part. without locating him, we don't know what his mental state was but obviously the mother felt the need to pull the child away from her. >> reporter: the mother was able to hang onto her daughter and run into the house. the man was last seen walking away on paven drive.

police canvassed the area looking for the man but they came up empty-handed. the man is described as being latino, between 20 to 30 years old. he was wearing a red baseball hat, jeans and a light-colored shirt with yellow stripes. the mother also said he smelled like you a omotive oil -- automotive oil. the police said they are trying to make up a sketch of him to show to the media so we can show you a better glimpse of him. they are also hoping that people call into the police department for with tips if they have any information 0en this case -- on this case. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. the president is expected to outline several executive actions he can take without congressional approval and then

he will lay out the measures he wants congress to tackle. the president is expected to call on congress to ban assault weapons and limit high-capacity ammunition clips. coming up at 7:15, we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom with a special guest who will money the -- join the president as he makes his announcement this morning. developing news out of london, england this morning. a helicopter crashed on a crowded street right during rush hour. ryan flores live in our newsroom now to show us these incredible pictures and tell us what happened. >> we've been following this story all morning long. at the time of the crash, it was very foggy. the pilot tried to land at a nearby airport but he didn't make it. of this is new video coming in just after the helicopter crash. two people are dead. 13 injured. they have not been identified. you can see the flames on the roadway. people on the streets, just in

shock. news reports, the helicopter crashed into a crane atop a luxury complex in central london, south of the river timms near rush hour. officials say the pilot was the only one on board the helicopter and began his flight in southwest england, he wanted to land in heathrow. he didn't make it. the other person killed, was in close proximity to the site. >> we believe a commercial helicopter 0en a scheduled flight has collided with a -- on a scheduled flight has collided with a luxury high rise. the helicopter came down and london paramedics and fire were

there within minutes. >> one of the 13 injured, we understand, is in critical condition. officials also say there was nobody inside the crane operating it. the focus will remain on that crane to make sure parts of it don't fall into the street. they also say helicopter pilots have only limited radar group and fly by using the ground reference points. the accident doesn't appear to be terror-related. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. a small group of redwood city boat owners ignored a midnight deadline, they are still docked at pete's harbor. 144 tenants there, received eviction notices. while most of the tenants left, a few still remain. seven of them have been given more time to move out while a few hours say they have no choice. they will defy the eviction orders. >> not the best time for this.

>> it's been record cold for the last fewer days. >> the inner harbor will be a private marina with residential units that will wring a lot of activity here. >> the developers now plan to build a 411-unit apartment complex along with private boat slips. a menlo park police officer, still on the job this morning despite reportedly soliciting a prostitute for sex while on duty. the mercury news reports police were checking on a 32-year-old female parolee in february of 2011. they say they found 48-year-old officer jeffrey kenneth vazquez naked in a hotel room with her. he reportedly told officers he had an hour to kill while serving a subpoena. vazquez was charged with a misdemeanor but that charge was later dropped. 7:07. the water is back on for people in berkeley after crews repaired a broken water line overnight.

the east pay municipal district said an 8-inch line ruptured at 7th and cedar yesterday around 5:00 p.m. 36 customers were affected but the service has been restored. 7:07. if you have to go to the toll plaza right now, sal, a lot of company. >> yes. westbound coming through. this is the peak of the commute, as you know. coming through to the toll plaza, it will be backed up for at least a 20-minute delay if you are at the end of the line unless you are using the carpool lane. all of the rest of the lanes will be slow. there are no problems on the bridge reported by chp at this time. as we look around and take a look at the south bay, 101, still busy after an earlier crash near 13th street. the crash was in the lanes for a while. they moved it off to the side but if you are driving into sunnyvale, you will give yourself extra time on 101. it's a pretty decent alternate. it's only slow near 17.

the morning drive is going to be okay on the great highway. but they will start a repaving project to create a smoother roadway for the entire stretch next to the pacific ocean. the roadwork will improve pedestrian access to the ocean and have a promenade at the west end of golden gate park. if you drive through the area, you start to see that busy -- some of that construction equipment getting ready to do this major project. expect delays. you can use sunset boulevard, by the way, as an alternate route if you don't want to go down to the great highway. a lot of people go down here because it's such a great drive but be warned. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. avenirs morning. sunrise. you think it's cold here, crested butte, colorado, gunnison county, minus 36 this morning. minus 36. >> wow. >> ced butte. i've been there, but in the summer. >> her hand sticking out there as the crews are getting close. we've been following this situation for the past hour. the woman's been stuck there since 3:45 this morning. she reportedly fell off a balcony and got wedged in a narrow space between the wall of a building and a parking garage. firefighters gave her a blanket to protect her from dust and they gave her water and were pumping hot air in the space to keep her warm. you can see the rescuer there without the helmet looks look he's very close to reaching the woman. we saw her hand sticking out from the side of the wall. so we're gonna keep a close eye on this. it looks like he's really trying to pry something loose and we'll give you more updates on "mornings on 2". >> they are trying to get air bags out there to ten her out. she's -- help her out. she's been conscious.

they have been able to squeeze out airspace. there's not much space in there. >> and if you are at all claustrophobic, the thought of it -- >> as we all are -- is rather daunting. so three and a half hours or so. it looks like they are communicating with her. she's heat conscious and talking but they have been getting her water and blankets to try to keep her warm. they didn't want the dust to become too strong to try to breathe in there with a limited amount of air that she has. you can see an awful lot of activity. a lot of crews working very hard. not sure where the balcony was where she fell. but wedged in that tight spot. they did cut some space in order to get pretty close. even for us claustrophobic people, psychologically that would help a little bit. >> yes. >> what a nightmare.

civil lawsuit against the psychiatrist of the accused gunman. she says the psychiatrist should have advised police to arrest james holmes weeks before the shooting rampage. a new poll shows most americans want tougher gun laws following the deadly school shooting in connecticut. 84% of those surveyed favor background checks for those who buy guns at gun shows. 7:17. we're less than two hours away now from hearing president obama's proposal for gun law changes. he will make the announcement surrounded by children who wrote to him after the newtown school shooting. kyla campbell is in our washington, d.c. newsroom where you just got a look at some of

those letters. >> reporter: my white house contact sent me three letters from kids from around the country. one little boy from georgia asked president obama to stop violence. an 11-year-old girl julia wrote she couldn't bear the not of losing her brothers and sisters -- the thought of losing her brothers and sisters to guns. at this morning's announcement, president obama is expected to push for better enforcement for existing gun laws. he can require keeping data on where guns are. the government stopped keeping track nine years ago. when it comes to the background, president obama can push for more sharing of information and prosecution of people who try to buy guns illegally. the president will need congress's approval to get sweeps changes made and that will not be an easy feat, especially with the nra prodding supporters in congress. we'll tang a look at the nra -- take a look at the nra's new ad

tackling president obama's gun proposals when i see you next. >> and ktvu will bring you live coverage. he's scheduled to make that announcement at 8:55 this morning our time. ktvu will be streaming the president's remarks live at ktvu.com. it is 7:18. people in the bay area are getting hit hard by one of the worse flu seasons to date. the california pacific medical center in san francisco says it is reporting four times more patients this flu season than it has seen in the past two years. they say most of the cases are adults whereas other parts of the country are seeing cases among children. they add they still have a good supply of the flu vaccine. santa rosa memorial hospital says a two-day nurses' strike did not interrupt services to patients.

the nurses walked out at 5:00 a.m. a.m. monday morning and the strike ended an hour ago. the labor dispute involves working conditions and higher pay. santa rosa memorial says it contracted with replacement nurses to ensure the quality care would continue. 7:19. well, employees of goodwill set aside a donated painting because it had the artist's signature but little did they know how valuable the painting was. take a look at the picture of the blackfoot indian. it was donated in a box, among other things. later, it was put on goodwill's auction site and sold for $70,000 back in twine. it was around original -- 2009. it was an original piece put together by maynard dixon. 7:20. well, an end finally to the bitter cold. temperatures finally going up. up next, meteorologist steve paulson will tell us by how

welcome back. we saw this woman's hands. i think we saw her head -- earlier this morning, this woman fell off a balcony and got ridged -- wedged into a tight space between the wall of a building. >> they are pulling up a

gurney. there's her hand. and apparently they called her husband in to try to calm her down a little bit. she was on a second-story balcony of a smoking area. some witnesses say she may have been walking on the top of a wall and that's how she may have fallen down and got wedged in this spot. you can see her hand. it's been moving quite a bit. they've been using air bags to try to create more space between the walls and have been pumping hot air in the space. they gave her some blankets, water. she's aheard -- alert. they are making progress and we're seeing more of her arm than we were originally. you can see the crews trying to guide her out. she must be wedged in their tight. >> there's not much space there at all. they are trying to pump in there to try to keep her arm, trying to ease the walls back -- you can see him talking to

her directly. >> yeah. >> they are close but -- wait a minute. >> they are -- again, they initially tried a rope rescue but that didn't work. so that's when they cut the space you see now right next to her but they didn't want to get too close to risk getting too much dust in her lungs. that's part of the reason she had the blanket to keep the dust out of there. >> i'm sure there are people saying why didn't they knock out that concrete around her to get her out. it must be dangerous for her. >> you don't want anything to fall on her. >> this has been going on since 3:45 this morning. they are very close but again, they obviously still have a lot of work to do. we're gonna keep an eye on this rescue and try to come back to it as soon as she is out. we'll bring you more updates on "mornings on 2". >> quite a busy morning in

portland. we're busy in our commute. sal is watching what the drivers are doing in the south bay. >> that's right. we have a lot of slow traffic this morning. 101 had a crash. 280 is kind of the freeway that people are using. northbound 101 right there there is a crash -- it was in the lanes for a while. on the shoulder but traffic is busy in the south bay. >> moving along and taking a look at the commute here in the east bay, it's been moderately heavy. if you are driving in contra costa county, 680 is okay through pleasant hill. a little bit of slow traffic. westbound 24, i see traffic slowing down here on the way to la fayette and into orinda. the morning commute is slow to the toll plaza. it's about a 20-minute wait there. let's go to steve. all right. thank you, sal. there is a lot going on. there's wacky temperatures in lake county. there's a pretty good breeze coming off from the geysers or

copper mountain. most temperatures around here, we get sunshine and temperatures will be warming up just a little bit. we're getting some upper 50s now, a few low 60s. 62 in santa cruz. it's a slow warmup. it will take us all the way into the weekend. what about rain, steve? end of the month. some lows. very cold still for us. 25s to 29. but highs are coming up. we'll get a lot of 20s, 30s on the low. but high temperatures start to come up. a few upper 50s to 60s. 7:26. troubling trend in san francisco. police say thieves have been targeting pharmacies but it's not the money they are after. >> reporter: we're live in oakland where the police chief is pushing for outside help when it comes to fighting crime but not everyone is on board. we'll take you to a very heated and fiery city hall meeting last night. >> reporter: we're live at san jose international airport where the only dreamliner flights in and out of the

two walls for about four hours. we just saw her being taken out. she's on a gurney. firefighters have been working to pull her out for hours. she reportedly fell off a second-story balcony. smoking area. she fell about 15 feet and got wedged in a narrow space stuck between a wall of a building and a parking garage. fire crews initially tried to use a rope to get her out. that didn't work. then they had to use a saw to cut the space. it looks like that's her husband. he was called in to calm her down, certainly quite a bit of relief for both of them. they also used air bags to try to widen the space a little bit and also used a lubricant to try to work her out. they pumped hot air in the space to keep her arm and gave her blankets to cover her mouth. you can see the space 2003 between the two ladders. the saw they used was a tool

that's used in earthquake rescues. so that was brought in. there were about 20 fire and rescue firefighters from portland, oregon there working on the scene. but the good news, this woman trapped for about four hours, now out and she will be taken to a hospital to make sure there's no injuries. she seemed to be up, alert and talking. more than thrilled, i'm sure, to be freed. we don't know how she was trapped between the two walls. witnesses said she was climbing the walls and yelling for help as she slipped and fell. if we get more updates on her situation, we'll bring them to you. but a happy ending there. a woman trapped in portland, oregon is free. 7:32. back here at home, the city of oakland one step closer to

adopting a new-crime tool -- a new crime-fighting tool. tara moriarty has more on this. >> reporter: crime is growing and the police department has been shrinking. so chief howard jordan wants to hire an outside consultant, a former los angeles police chief to help crack down on crime. the trouble is not everyone is on board. [booing] >> reporter: chief jordan was booed and heckled. this includes hiring bill bratton credited with reducing crime in los angeles and new york city. even though the public safety committee approved the measure, some tactics like stop and frisk are heavy-handed. the debate got underway in city hall. protesters formed outside. >> stop this unsurd, obscene --

absurd, obscene waste of money. >> bill bratton will be giving me advice. it's up to me to implement it and how i do it and if i do it is really on my shoulders. thank you. >> reporter: now, the plan also includes more funding for the police academy to train new officers and hire 20 police service technicians. it would allow the hiring of 11 alameda county sheriff deputies for up to 180 day -- days. this all comes after an eight- day shooting stretch that left eight people dead. this will go to the full council next tuesday. it's expected to be another heated and fiery discussion. live from oakland, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police chief jordan is backing off comments he made

about gangs. on monday, chief jordan raised eyebrows when he said the two gangs in east oakland are responsible for 90% of the city's violent crime since last summer. chief jordan now says he was confused and got his figures wrong. mayor jean quan made a similar error last year when she talked about oakland's crime problem. just days after the boeing 787 dreamliner started flying in and out of the bay area, many of these high-tech jets are now grounded. lorraine blanco is at mineta san jose international airport with new information that you have just learned. good morning, lorraine. >> reporter: good morning. i just got off the phone with the public information here at san jose international airport. and she tells me one inbound flight and one outbound flight have been canceled. she said she's waiting on word from nipon airways.

last night, nipon air made an emergency landing. they exited off the emergency slide. no within because hurt this is the latest -- no one was hurt. this is the latest of problems including an electrical fire in boston and a fuel leak and a cracked cockpit window. a spokesperson said they will use revenue while the airline is grounded but they are doing the right thing by putting the passenger safety first. this is an important service for the city. san jose officials estimate they will generate $78 million in business and 61 jobs in its fist year. passengers are being rebooked

on nipon and until further notice, there are no further flights being taken in or out of the airport. back to you. san francisco police reporting a troubling new trend among thieves. they are robbing pharmacies for drugs, not cash. monday, police say two suspects robbed two drugstores, first a clement pharmacy was robbed. five hours later, police say two thieves robbed the golden pharmacy. morphine and then a prescription methamphetamine. >> we're working hard to see if there's any connection. we don't want such a problem ongoing. both pharmacies say they do have surveillance video of the problems -- of the robbers. no one was hurt. the people in charge of online classes at the university of california are scheduled to give a

presentation to the uc regents about the lack of success marketing the online classes to nonstudents. the university spent $4.3 million marketing its online classes. hoping to attract tuition from students around the world. but since classes began a year ago, only one person who is not already a uc student has taken the class. uc online classes cost $1400 to $2400. but other universities such as stanford and harvard are offering online classes for free. hundreds of thousands of students have signed up for those classes. uc berkeley is one of the top ten best public college values in the country aid -- according to kiplinger magazine. the magazine looked at admission rates, and other items to come up with the list.

ucla is the highest ranking california school. there is a new report suggesting some college co-eds are turning to so-called sugar daddies to help them pay for education. a website shows a 67% increase in the number of female students signing up for the online service. they spend time with a male companion who helps them with their education and dorm expenses. the biggest increase is at the georgia state university followed by new york university. berkeley, by the way, is 38th. uc davis is 43. bay area congresswoman zoe is honoring air rob swartz.

her proposed legislation called aaron's law would change the computer fraud and abuse act. she says the law allowed the government to bring disproportionate charges against swartz. we want to check in with sal, see what's happening on the roads. sal? >> we're starting with the south bay on 280 northbound as you get up to -- up to highway 17. got some slow traffic there. this is 280 just north of downtown san jose. i think a lot of people heard prot will be -- about the problems on 101. that crash has been cleared. it was clear and people were seeing slow traffic pulling up to 101 at 280, so they decided to get on 280. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. it's backed up for about a 20- minute wait. no major problems, getting into san francisco. if you are driving in contra costa county, southbound 680 is busy from pleasant hill all the way down to a minor crash near

rutgy road. look at highway 4 antioch. a lot of slow traffic there and the traffic continues to be slow. i want to mention as i move the maps to the east bay, 880 southbound is pretty heavy. let's go to steve. well, i've been busier than an ant at a picnic. there is a lot going on. i get there's crazy stuff going on in lake county, cobb, i think lower lack, about 50 degrees. pretty good breeze coming off. other locations are in the upper 20s or 30s. you are not seeing things. most locations are in the 20s, 30s. especially around here. we're also getting a couple of series of systems trying to breakthrough. i don't think it will happen for a while. there are signs about 10 to 15 days out of a more consolidating of the jet stream. that would bring rain back here and go from cold to very mild and warm if that happens. i think it will. it's just a slow pro set.

right now we're dealing with the low of sun -- with a lot of sun. air mass was unbelievably dry, especially on sunday. but temperatures are coming up, the amount of moisture in the air is coming up a little bit. i think we'll get back into some of that fog this morning. >> temperatures have actually cooled off in parts of alaska. they are 10 degrees colder today. our wind from yesterday and the day before has calmed down considerably. it's still a component of an easterly breeze. when you go et that, that's beneficial for coast and bay. inland temperatures, when you struggle with upper 20s, it's cold. tom, 30 in blossom hill. 37 oakland. redwood city, 35. you get the idea. you can see the offshore breeze

taking the clouds away. that's a land sea breeze. some of the higher elevations, you get up around 1500 to 2,000 feet. for us, east breeze means a little warmer. clearlake 57. sonoma 57. sought leito, 57. oakland, 59. i almost went 60. 58 in berkeley. 57 morgan hill to 57 san jose. but santa cruz now punching through. we go low in the 60s. palo alto, fog will be back more so probably on the weekend. that will not affect the coast or the bay. inland -- inland temperatures come up each day. in just over an hour, the president will unveil his gun control plan. what he's expected to say and the strong resistance from both sides of the aisle. the investigation into lance armstrong includes his relationship with someone in the bay area. ♪

more than $350,000 and who earn bonuses of more than $50,000 will be affected. experts say deferring the bonuses could discourage workers from making deals that create short-term profits that cause problems in the long run. a new study shows younger americans carry smaller credit card balance than older consumers. the aarp says low and middle- income americans over the age of 50 had an average balance of 8300 and were able to pay down 16% of that debt. but younger consumers had an average balance that was $2,000 lower and they paid off more than a third of what they owed. police in milpitas hope a new sketch will help catch a suspect at the great mall who tried to kidnap a 3-year-old boy. the describe is -- the suspect is described as asian bean 50 and 60. hes has a potbelly and a

assault weapons ban through the congress, that's probably not going to happen. the question of expanding background checks extended to all gun sales, that would be very controversial. you have to think back the last time -- we've talked about this before, tori. the stockton, california shooting at a school in 1989 really prompted a lot of movement on gun control in the congress. that led to california banning -- california provisions on assault weapons, also action in the congress as well. but since then there's been a major change. even when the democrats were in charge in the congress of the first yee -- of the first two years of the obama administration, there recall not really anything -- there really were not anything. we'll see how many people change their minds as we look at the details from the president. >> and there are democrats who

don't want to have excessive fun control? >> reporter: no, no. even though the democrats are in charge of the u.s. senate, the chances they are for getting gun controls are not very good. dianne feinstein wants to introduce the assault weapons ban, get it to the floor and get a vote. i think a lot of us would be completely shocked if that were to get a majority of votes in the senate. patrick haley of development -- patrick laically of vermont, he said begrudgingly they were gonna have hearings. you go in the house of representatives, it's a similar thing. i think last year, there were one or two guns rights issues. could things change? after the stockton shooting in

this was really scary for one family, janine. >> reporter: yeah, definitely was. i just spoke with the mother's roommate. they say that they are just completely rattled that this happened. it happened on del court. it's a middle-class neighborhood but police say considering how brazen this kidnap -- attempted kidnapping was that the woman and the daughter are fortunate because this could have turned out much differently. now, police received a 911 call from a woman at around 5:40 yesterday afternoon saying a strange man approached her and her 2-year-old daughter. she said her toddler and other children were playing in the front and the man made a comment about her 2-year-old that made her uncomfortable. she picked up her daughter and that's when the man grabbed the toddler's legs and tried to pull her away. police say he pulled so hard that the little girl's shoes fell off. the mother was able to hang onto her daughter and get into the house. this is what her roommate had to say. >> she's still in shock but the

babies are fine. >> reporter: are you disturbed? >> i'm a little rattled. i'm okay. >> reporter: the man was last seen walking away on paven drive. police searched the area and talked to neighbors trying to see if there were any witnesses but they were unable to locate the man and they came up empty- handed. here is a description of the man. latino, between 20 to 30 years old, we are told he was wearing jeans and a light-colored shirt with yellow stripes as well as a red baseball cap and the mother also says that he smelled like automotive oil. now, later on this morning, police are hoping to get a sketch artist in, come back out to the neighborhood to reinterview the mother to see if they could release a sketch of this suspect to the media so that we can show you that. they are also looking for tips from anyone who might have information on this case. coming up, later on in this hour of "mornings on 2," you will hear from neighbors of

school by subway or make other arrangements after school bus drivers went on strike. drivers walked off the job early this morning. the union is upset that the city put its bus contracts up for bid with no job guarantees for drivers. the strike affects more than 150,000 students and about a third of them are disabled. school officials handed out metro cards so students could take the subway and city buses. san francisco could soon require more than just construction companies to give preference to city residents when they hire new workers. now supervisors will consider requiring tech companies to hire people who live in the city. right now, they only have to consider -- they only have to consider hiring san francisco residents. 8:19. the mountain view city council is waiting to make a decision

she's out. >> a woman in portland, oregon, rescued finally free and happy after being trapped between two walls for almost four hours. you saw it live right here on ktvu. those firefighters who had to saw open a concrete wall pulled that woman to safety just about an hour ago. we've been following this very

tricky, difficult rescue throughout the morning. firefighters first tried to pull her out with a strap. when that didn't work, they used a saw to cut open the wall. >> we still had to slide her out. we had to lubricate the walls. >> reportedly, she got wedged into that 8-inch space after falling off a balcony. during the rescue, firefighters kept giving her cups of water to keep her hydrated. they gave her blankets and blew in warm air to keep her warm. 8:30. oakland's public safety committee approved a controversial crime-fighting plan last night. it was a unanimous vote by the committee late last night. ktvu's tara moriarty is in oakland and says that meeting at many points got out of hand. tara? >> reporter: well, chief jordan wants to hire an outside consultant, bill bratton, in

ktvu's janine de la vega is in san jose right now. janine, you are talking to neighbors about what happened out there. what are they saying? >> reporter: well, people who live here on del court are shakening up. this neighborhood is located off south white road and aborn road. some people i spoke to said they don't know their neighbors and this whole attempted kidnapsing is gonna prompt them to start a neighborhood watch group. a-year-old -- the 2-year-old was in front of her house playing with her siblings and a man made a comment that the mother felt was uncomfortable so she grabbed her child and the man tried to grab her from her arms. >> they were laying in the --

it's pretty traumatic. >> reporter: how do you feel? >> as a mom, pretty freaked out. it's your kid. had to fight for her. >> reporter: the mother was able to hang onto her daughter and run into the house and call 911. the man was last seen walking away on paven drive. police canvassed the area last night looking for him but came up empty-handed. he's described as being latino between 20 to 30. we're told that he is 5'6" and had a thin build. he was wearing a red baseball hat, jeans, a light shirt with yellow stripes and the mother also said that he smelled like automotive oil. now, police this morning say they are gonna try to get together with a sketch artist, possibly reinterview the mother so that they can have a sketch drawn up to release it to the media so we can show you that. that's gonna happen today. they are also trying to see if they can get more tips to people because they would like anyone to call them if they

victims. the san jose sharks are remembering the man who fought the -- brought the team to the south bay. they are paying tribute to george gun iii, the team's original owner. he died yesterday at the age of 75 in palm springs. in 1990, he and his brother relinquished ownership of another nhl team with the rights of an expansion team in the bay area. he sold the sharks in 2002 but continued to attend games. the sharks will homer him -- honor him with a helmet decal bearing his initials. tickets for the sharks go on sale in a little more than an hour. the first home game is a week from tomorrow against phoenix. there are promotions throughout the season, including opening night give away and lunch with the team. well, the trophy tour for the world champion san francisco giants moves to

going to do everything to try to match the resolve you demonstrated. no one can know for certain if this senseless act could have been prevented but we all know we have a moral obligation, a moral obligation to do everything in our power to diminish the prospect that something like this could happen again. as the president knows i have worked in this field a long time, in the united states senate, having chaired a committee that had jurisdiction over these issues of guns and crime and having drafted the first gun violence legislation, the last gun violence legislation i should say. and i have no illusions about we're up against, what we're up against or how hard the task is in front of us but i also have never seen the nation's conscience so shaken by what happened at sandy hook. the world has changed, and it is demanding action and it is in this context that

the president asked me to put together along with cabinet members a set of recommendations about how we should proceed to meet that moral horrible mitigation we have. toward that end the cabinet members and i sat down with 229 groups, not just individuals representing groups, 229 groups, from law enforcement agencies to public health officials to gun i believe ifs to gun advocacy groups, to, to sportsmen and hunters and religious leaders, and i have spoken with members about of congress from both sides of the aisle. had extensive conversation with mayors and governors and county officials and the recommendations we provided to the president on monday call for executive actions he could sign, legislation he could call for, and long term research that should be undertaken. they're based on the emerging consensus we heard from all the groups with whom we spoke including some of you who are the victims of this god awful occurrence. ways to keep guns out of the

wrong hands, as well as ways to take comprehensive action to prevent violence in the first place. we should do as much as we can as quickly as we can. we can not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. some of what you will hear from the president will happen immediately. some will take some time. but we have begun and we are starting here today. we're resolved to continue this fight. during the meetings that we held we met with a young man who is here today. colin goddard is here. where are you, colin? colin was one of the survivors of the virginia tech massacre. he was in the classroom. he calls himself one of the lucky seven, and he will tell you, he was shot four times on that day and he has three bullets that are still inside him. and, when i asked colin about what he thought we should be doing, he said that he said, i'm not here because of what happened to me. i'm here because of what happened to me keeps
